23 December 1881 — Milton Abbey, nr. Blandford, Dorset
Friday. 23rd December [1881]. Went up to Susan’s room & sat with her & shewed her my regalia & then went with Nety to see schoolroom & she sang to me. Went downstairs & directed a lot of Christmas cards to send off by post. Directly after lunch Henry & I & Lina & Susan drove in the cab to Bere. Nety sat on the box. We found fires lighted & Mrs Miller, Monty’s housekeeper expecting us. Lina, Nety & I walked up the village to Galtons shop of antiquities where he was making a lot of old oak boxes & tables with scraps of old oak carvings & a lot of new stained wood. We saw nothing to tempt & so went back & had tea & buttered toast & then at 20 to 5 Montys carriage carried me & Henry off to Canford where we are going to spend Christmas. We got there at 6. Cornelia recd us in the library & shortly after Lord Randolph Churchill arrived from London. I retired to my own room & read till dinner. I found a letter from Blanche saying Constance was ill & it was pronounced to be typhoid fever. Mama & Schrei: were staying at Canford– There was no one else. We dined at 8.15. They played whist in evening.
