24 December 1881 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Saturday. 24th December [1881]. Breakfast at 9.30. Walked out with Henry & Ivor. We went by the church to see where the racquet court has been demolished. The floor is left & forms a lawn tennis place. We walked on to the Manor Farm & tennis court & home round by the village. Lunched at 1.30 & directly after I went off to Hampreston with Madmoiselle in the carriage to the school for a mother’s meeting. There were abt 20 women gathered together & a long time was spent in settling accounts with them one by one. Then I was requested to read a story book—of which I read 2 chapters—then I read a bit of another book & then a prayer & we broke up. I went to see old Mrs Pond an ancient dame who is one of the few who remember us as children. She was in ecstasies to see me & asked after all of us &c. We walked home by the new bridge & lodge & old G. Warren opened the gate & was also very pleased to see me. It was dark & abt 5 when I got home. Mama & Schrei left for London this morning on acct of Connie’s illness. We had a telegram to say she was going on well. Lady Randolph Churchill arrived in the afternoon. Dined at 8.15. Whist in eveng & I worked.
