26 December 1881 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Monday. 26th December [1881]. Breakfast at 9.30. I went out for a walk to call on Mrs Meaby with whom I sat a long time chatting. I went a moment into the school to see the Guest children dressing up a tree for the school children tomorrow. I went on to Mrs White & found her & old White just going to have dinner & their daughter struggling to get her infirm mother down the narrow stairs from her bedroom. Old sixty ribbed White, as he used to be called, is now half paralysed & immoveable– I went on to Bakers (the woodman) who now lives where the old “public” used to be. He was in & I sat chatting together of old days when we all were young & “was so happy together like one family” as he expressed it. Ivor & Cornelia called to see him & so I walked home to luncheon with them. After lunch I went in the pony carriage with Cornelia to Broadstone to see the school treat there. There were a lot of children all at tea under the superintendence of Mr Combes the curate. There was a conjuror who had been had down from London & after the tea Cornelia gave away some prizes & then the conjuring began & Cornelia & I set off leaving the little Guests to see out the fun. We drove in to Wimborne where altho’ the shops were shut Cornelia rang the bell of Mrs Hansdens & begged her to send presents for tomorrows Christmas Tree & then we went home. After tea Lady Randolph played the piano & Ivor & I tried over duetts together Rubinstein & Mendlessohn’s. Maria, Richard & Alice arrived from London. We dined at 8. Henrys nose was very painful all the morning but I made him steam it a few times & it got better by night. Ivor & I & Lady Randolph returned to our trying over duets. Lord Randolph left for Ireland this morning.
