30 December 1881 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 30th December [1881]. I breakfasted in bed & Maria came & talked to me & told me abt the Wimborne ball. I got up abt 12 & went downstairs & found Lady Randolph & Margaret Ashley playing duetts together. After lunch I went out in the victoria & taking Lady Margaret Charteris with me. We drove to Wimborne, got some N. Year’s cards to send away & went to the house agent’s to enquire abt the letting of Uddens for Lady Margaret– Stopt at Baverstock & bought some little presents. Went to Uddens & past Ivor & his men guests shooting. The approach to Uddens is a long road lined with evergreens across the common & one has to X a railroad. The house is small & somewhat dull looking—stands in rather a pretty park. We went over the house wh is not a very convenient one & Lady M. did not seem to take a fancy to it. It was nearly dusk when we came home by the new bridge. The sport had been good over 200 head. I was lucky eno’ to have Monty to take me in to dinner and I had a very merry dinner & Monty was in such good spirits that it reminded me of our old days. There was a ball in the evening & a great many neighbours came over amongst them Lady Malmesbury, Lady normanton & party, Lady Eldon Bankes &c &c. I amused myself most of the eveng in dancing with the Guest children keeping them in order. I had one turn of a walse with Monty which I enjoyed immensely as he walses so splendidly. At 3 o’cl the cotillion began & I went off to bed– The ball had been very lively & the cotillion was not over till near 5 as I hear.
