11 January 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 11th January [1882]. Sat with Monty while he breakfasted & we had some household talk. Had a talk about Adelines behaviour to me & we agreed that she was behaving very badly & that until she apologised for the way she had behaved we ought not to countenance her. Monty went out & returned to lunch. Maria & Alice came to lunch. Henry took the latter to see the old Masters. Maria & I went shopping. I bought china, iron mongery, cretonnes &c for the house. But having a headache was obliged to return home soon after 4 & rest. Ella Drake called after 5 also Mama then Charlie & 2 of his boys Jack & Monty. I had rather a miserable evening going out to dine with the Tenterdens feeling very unwell. However by dint of not eating & of taking a little champagne I got thro’ all right. Herr Sturm a German secy took me to table & I sat next to the Italian Ambassador Menabrea. It was a large party. Lord & Ly Reay, Ly Isabella Schuster, Mr & Mrs Rowcliffe, Mrs Douglas Murray &c &c. After dinner Mrs Rowcliffe & another lady sacrificed on the piano. They sang & no one listened altho’ they evidently sang well.
