12 January 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 12th January [1882]. Busy morning in the house. Genl. Hankey called to see me– Then Mrs Willy Hanson & her little girl. Sir Arthur Otway came & spent a long time with Henry & stayed & lunched with us. After lunch Henry & I went to the Grosvenor Gallery to see Watts’ Exhibition & enjoyed it immensely. It is a very fine collection. His own portrait is magnificent. We went to the F.O. to get an address & then I left Henry at the Athenaeum. Went down to Prince’s Gardens to see Sir Wm Drake who is laid up with Eczema & sat with him about an hour. We dined at Lady Hammonds & met Mrs Lord & Mr Cartwright & Mr Thornton & Sir Rutherford Alcock. Ld Hammond took me to dinner & Mr Cartwright was my other neighbour. Lord Hd was very cheery & talkative & pleasant. We came home early. We sent Giovanni in the morng to fetch our furniture from Frederic’s house.
