14 January 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 14th January [1882]. The carpenter came & opened the boxes Henry had at the Pantechnicon & our pictures &c were unpacked– Mr Burton came to see Henry & prescribed for his deafness & also for me as I felt rather bilious. Wrote letters &c. After luncheon I drove to enquire after Mrs Austen & was told she was better. Then went to see Connie, found Maria with her & waited till she left—then went in & sat an hour with Connie. She crochetted all the time. At 4 I went off to Claverton St to call on Genl. & Lady Dickson & found they were out. I had driven a short way from their door when I passed a carriage in wh they were so I turned back & went up & sat with Lady Dickson– Got home a few minutes after 5. Found Maria waiting for me– Soon joined by Henry & by Mr Bowyer Smijth. He has now left diplomacy & lives in London with his sister. When they were all gone went up & sat with Henry in his study where he was tearing up old papers & arranging them. He showed me some of his old letters when he was a boy & travelling with an Italian friend called Duport & a charming Contessina– We dined alone & played cribbage. He gave me a very amusing account of his boyish devotion for the Contessina—his first love—& the jealousy of her husband, during a journey they all made together on the Lagos Maggiore & Orta with Duport.
