19 January 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 19th January [1882]. Wrote & worked machine. After lunch I went out to call on Lady Hammond who was out—to the F.O. to leave a letter for Consple. On to change books at library. To Cavendish House for a muff for S. Hambro; to see Mrs White, Henry’s cousin. She was at home sat talking. Went on to Langham Hse to see Mama who was in to enquire for Connies boy who is better of his scarletina. Went to Mrs Hutchins & found both her & Miss de Bernaben at home. Came home. Worked at sewing machine till dinner. Went to dine at 1 Richd Terrace with Mr & Mrs Bertram Currie—a small dinner very good cook. Mrs Currie is a sad good quiet woman looking wretchedly ill. They have a precocious boy of 18. The house is done up in quiet taste rich but uninteresting. Met Mr P. Currie, a Miss Glyn, daughter of an Admiral—a Miss Currie & a lady & gentleman we had met at Rome last year but whose names I don’t remember. The evening was heavy. Young Currie showed us curious French books with indecent prints which he had better have not done especially as he gave them to Miss Glyn & Philip Currie to look over– Home at 11. The barometer is said to be alarmingly high & a great storm is expected–
