22 January 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 22nd January [1882]. I woke with a headache & remained in bed [till] 4 o’cl. Arthur came at lunch time & came & sat w ith me & we had a long talk over his troubles wh still continue. Henry went out in the carriage. Mr T. Gibson Bowles Editor of the Vanity Fair came to tea & was beginning to talk & tell me gossip when unfortunately old Mr Bunbury came to call & he was silent. Mr Bowles has just returned from Algiers & he said I found all the French very angry about the Tunis affair & he said he thought it would prove Gambetta’s “Mexico”—that Gambetta & all the French Ministers have been dipping in the till & made immense sums of money which occasioned the present financial crisis. Henry & Alice returned before old Bunbury left– Alice read to me before dinner. Arthur came & dined & amused us very much—with many funny sayings.
