23 January 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 23rd January [1882]. I came down rather late. Alice read aloud to me Dean Stanley’s essays on our services. Arthur brought Mildred to luncheon with us. Afterwards he took them to the Old masters, & Henry took Alice to the National Gallery. I went & fetched Susan Hambro to drive with me. As she was not quite ready I went to Queen Anne’s Street to see after Blanche’s children, they were all out but the baby. I went up to see him & found him all right. Went back for Susan & we went to Miss Bells in Wigmore St to see abt ordering a tea gown. We each ordered one for £12 a piece. To Cavendish Hse abt Connies girls muffs—on to Mount St for Susan & then took her home. Went on to Marshall & Snelgrove’s abt cretonnes & then home. Met Mr Ffrench in Bond St & he said he had just been to call on me—so I begged him to come back– He got into my carriage & came home with me & stayed talking nearly 2 hours. Maria came up to fetch Alice & took her home. Mrs Holmes White & her girl called– Mama & Mr S. came later. Arthur came & dined with us & he & I played cribbage in the eveng & when he was gone I played with Henry till bed time.
