25 February 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 25th February [1882]. Henry & I went to dine with Lady Burdett Coutts and took Mrs Hanson with us. There were there Lady & Miss Keppel, Rev. Mr White (Savoy Chapel), Sir Algernon Bosthwick (who took me to dinner), Genl. Eyre & Mr Marriott MP. Bosthwick was agreeable as usual but very “fine”– He talked of “Ouida” who has dedicated a book to him– He says he knows her slightly & avoids her– He told a story how she was very anxious to make the acquaintance of Cameron of Lochiel & Sir Algernon promised to bring him to wh she said “that will be delightful & I hope he will come in his kilt!” As Cameron did not go in his kilt Ouida hardly looked at him. I asked him about Mrs Langtry– He said she was a success on the stage but was too cold—which had been the reason of her want of success. He said she had never been able to fascinate any one to the extent of making him her slave. She had tried on Lord Shrewsbury, & had been outdone by Mrs Mundy—not half such a handsome woman, but one who so fascinated her prey that she could do anything with him. Sir A. seemed to think Mrs Langtry was honestly earning her livelihood on the stage which one hopes may be true. After dinner had a long talk with the Baroness who was in despair about politics & Gladstone. Every one is talking of the coming collision between the Lords & Commons on Monday & there is a vague impression that Gladstone will be beaten & will resign. We went on to Spencer House where there was an immense crowd of people– It rained & we gave up going to Lady Stanhopes & we did not find it very easy to get away when we wanted to go home. I met the Alderson girls & Blossett whom I had not seen for many a day & who had been companions of my youth.
