26 February 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 26th February [1882]. I went off to St Margarets Westminster with Monty. We started at 10.30 & went in a cab so as to get there early & get seats in the Members pews which we did. Canon Farrar preached an excellent sermon on the observance of Lent—objecting to fasting that made people ill or fretful but encouraging some kind of observance– He spoke of the necessity of contribution towards getting a new organ—& said that he foresaw the day when there would be no religion of the state & as he wished to make the church worthy of the H. of C. he felt it must be done now before such a state of things actually happened. He talked also of “these days of blasphemy”– Monty & I walked home to Savile Row across the Park & it was blustery & threatened to be showery. I parted with him & went in to lunch with Blanche. Henry went to luncheon at Mr Robert Bourke’s to meet Mr Hamilton Lacey. Edward & I had a long political talk at lunch on the gloomy state of affairs which he declares are not so bad & he ought to know as he is Ld Richard Grosvenor’s private secy. Blanche & I walked to church at St George’s Hanover Sqr & came in for a children’s service. We then walked on to Savile Row & there found Arthur & little Mildred. She remained with me & Arthur went to Q. Anne St with Blanche. The Marquis of Casa Iglesia (Rances) came to call & had tea– Mr Smijth also came. Henry went to dine with Baron Alfred de Rothschild & I went to dine with the Hambros. Lady Agneta Montague, Mr & Mrs Algernon West, Mrs Currie (Susan’s sister). We found Mrs West anything but an agreeable companion. She has a way, which may be mere habit, of contradicting every thing & every body. She brought me home in her carriage & Mr West & Mr Hambro went in our carriage to the Cosmopolitan where Henry was to go after his dinner.
