4 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 4th March [1882]. Wrote in the morning. Mrs W. Hanson came to tell me that the play we were going to this afternoon is at 2 not ½ past– We lunched at 1 & directly after I drove off to 4 Cavendish Place to fetch Mrs Hanson & we went to the Lyceum Theatre. Lady Burdett Coutts had given Mrs Hanson her box to see the Two Roses—in wh Irving acts today for the last time. We found on getting there that it did not begin till 2.30 & we had plenty of time to wait. Mrs Oldham, Hilda Hanson—little Kathleen, Mr Kay (R.N.) & Mr Cartwright were of the party. Irving acted well but overdid his part & was too tragical. We got home att 5.30. Monty came in abt 6 & said he had invited 10 people to supper this evening after the theatre. Henry & I dined alone & abt 11 Mrs Currie, Miss Stewart, Miss Susie St Quintin & Capt. Arthur Armstrong came from the theatre. Abt 10 minutes after Susan & Nety Hambro, Monty & Mr Alick Yorke, & Mr T. Farley came & we went in to supper. I did not realize Susie St Quintin & asked Susan Hambro “who that girl was”—& on being informed it was my old friend we fell into each others arms & embraced. She was nearly crying at my cold & estranged manner to her. They all left at abt 12.30.
