Monday. 6th March [1882]. Wrote letters &c Arthur, Monty & Mrs Burr came & chatted in the morning. Susie St Quintin lunched with us. I find she is staying with Mr Bowyer Smijth’s sister. He was secy at the Embassy at Consple with Henry. Henry & I went at 3 to the Nat. Gallery to see Mr Burton. He showed us the portrait by he has just bought at Venice & we went up stairs to the gallery & went round it with him. We met Mrs Lowther there. At 4.20 we left & I went & left some cards & came home by 5. Col. & Mrs James Baker called. Arthur came to dine and Monty coming in from the house just as we were sitting down to dinner he dined with us. Bradlaugh was the topic discussed & the question of the clôture—two burning questions. Arthur & I played cribbage. Monty returned to the house. Henry & I had a game of cribbage & went early to bed– We nearly had the house on fire by Henry’s poking his pillow over the candle. I saw it & pulled it off the bed & it was not burning long. | |
