7 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 7th March [1882]. Letter writing—& made Henry a lot of cigarettes. Sir Henry Cole came to luncheon with us. Talk of different kind of projects & works– During lunch Cecil Alderson & his son Augustus turned up. The latter asked for a bed here wh we gladly give him. They had come up to get A. his outfit for his journey out to Manitoba where he is going on 6th April. At 3 I drove out went to Maples & returned some blue lining—then to Little Wanzer Machine shop to buy some improvements—to Langham House. I found the Mother at home & soon after Ivor came in. We began to talk politics & he criticised Monty for having voted for Bradlaugh last night in the H. of C. I declared Monty had done so only on Gladstone’s assurance that something shd be done to settle the question & so we got very hot abt it & I was very cross. Came home. Mr J. Ashburnham came to tea also Lena & Sarah Bruce & then Sir Collingwood & Lady Dickson– Blanche came after 7 & hindered me dressing by stopping to talk—so we were rather late getting to the Rates’ where we dined. Mr Burton took me to dinner & I sat next to Lord Aberdare. We afterwards went to Lady Stanhopes to have the honor of meeting the P. & Pss of Wales. It was rather a small party & tho’ somewhat stiff it was pleasant. We did not stay very late.
