8 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 8th March [1882]. I discovered I have another boil coming & am in despair. Monty advised me to go off & see Dr Fenwick at 29 Harley Street so I walked there accompanied by Gussie Alderson. He left me & returned to Savile Row. Dr F. saw me at once & gave me 4 different prescriptions. He said I ought not to use linseed poultices but merely cold water compresses. I went on to Blanche & found her just going out shopping with little Olwen. I accompanied them to Marshal & Snelgrove’s & thence walked home just in time for luncheon– At 3 Henry & I drove out together. We went to leave several cards & then to the S. Kensington museum to see abt the exhibiting of our two old custodys & to ask for a receipt for them. We enquired at Sir Wm Drakes’. He is still ill from eczema. I went to see Mrs Poynter whom I had not seen since her baby was born– She had a very pretty niece Miss Burne Jones with her– I came home to tea. Signor Castellani called also Col. Layard (the head of the family), Blanche, Arthur & Mr Rate & then Miss Anne Murray. We dined at 6.30 & Monty & Gussie with us. Henry & I went to Lyceum Theatre to Lady Burdett Coutts box to see Romeo & Juliet given for the 1st time by Irving. The mis en scene was splendid & the dresses beautiful. Ellen Terry acted Juliet—but was not very satisfactory. Irving as Romeo was detestable—& very affected & ranting. Teriss as Mercutio was too boisterous– The house was crammed & all the critics of the day were there & the P. & Pss of Wales. The D. & Dss of Wellington, Ld & Ly Mayoress– Greenwood Augustus Sala, &c &c. The house was very enthusiastic & the actors much applauded.
