9 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 9th March [1882]. Arranged to let Giovanni go off to Venice & Burroughes promised to fill his place. Wrote letters. Went out at 2.30 went to see Susan Hambro & sent the carriage for Blanche who joined me there & we drove together. Henry went to the Levée at 1.30 & came back at 2.30. Blanche & I went to pay some visits. We went to Lowther House, it being Mrs L’s day & she received us. The house is like a country house & very charming & picturesquely furnished & decorated. We did not stay long but went on to Lady Holland but she did not receive then to Mrs Childers’ where we found a regular reception going on—& I found myself seated by Lady Lloyd Lindsay & we got out together rather glad to escape from rather an ordeal & we retired to Savile Row for tea. Arthur came to tea & Gussy came in & walked home afterwards with Blanche. Arthur Burr came to call & later Mama came. Gus had his dinner alone at 6 & went to the play– Monty & Arthur dined with us. Arthur & Henry played cribbage in the evening & Blanche fetched me abt 10.30 & took me to the H of C with her. She had had places given her by Sir Wm Dyke. We heard Lord Hartington & Sir Stafford Northcote speak but both were dull. We saw the end of the debate & the 2 divisions which finished it. Mr Goschen came up to see Blanche & stayed some time talking. Sir Wm Dyke also came for a little while. It was past two when we got home–
