11 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 11th March [1882]. Stayed in bed till 11 being very tired. Maria came to luncheon bringing her children Enid Ruth & Daisy. Mr Ffrench also came bringing young Earnest Hunt with him. After lunch we sent the 4 children off to German Reed entertainment with Hill & her mother much to their delight. It was a wet afternoon– Maria & I went driving together. We went to see Blanche, then called on Lady Edith Ashley who was at home—to the Soho Bazaar & to see Molly Alderson who was not in– There was such a yellow fog that we did not stay out long. Mr Rate came to tea & also Mr Poynter– Mr Ward the gentleman chef who had been recommended to me came to arrange about cooking a dinner for me next Tuesday. We made a bill of fare & just as I was going out to dinner he returned to tell me it wd take him 2 days & so he must charge 2 guineas instead of 1. This proceeding put our backs up & we dismissed him. Maria’s children returned abt 6 & had tea before they returned home. Henry & I dined at Mrs Goschen’s. Count Bismark took me to dinner (Prince Bismark’s son) & Ld Morley sat on the other side of me. Lord Coleridge sat not far & within my hearing. He told many stories mostly old & worn. Ct Bismark did not strike me as being anything remarkable. We talked abt Ct Hatzfeldt & he said he had been ill. I said I supposed from over work at Consple. He answered that he did not think that could be so as an ambassador had no responsible position. I said that had not been my experience. He answered “Oh with us they refer everything home– My father does not trust them & never lets them do anything on their own responsibility.” The evening was rather dull—the gentlemen did not come from the dining room till ¼ to 11—& Henry & I had to give up going to the Tennyson’s party wh was from 9.30 to 11.
