15 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 15th March [1882]. Wrote letters. Worked sewing machine. Drove out with Henry after lunch & we went to Grosvenor Gate & walked thro’ the Park all the way down to Princes Gate to see the hyacinths wh are beginning to come out. The sun was quite warm & it was a splendid day like spring all the trees budding & people in open carriages. At Princes Gate Henry & I parked and he went to visit Sir Wm Drake while I went & left cards & took two sketches of Henry as a boy to Wood’s to be mounted & so home by 5. Mrs Bagot came to tea also Mrs & Miss Drummond & my mother. Henry & I went to dine at Mr & Mrs Graham’s in Grosvenor Place. We met Lady Harcourt, Sir Walter & Lady James, Ld & Lady Reay besides others. Sir Walter took me to dinner & I sat next Mr Graham. It was not very entertaining. Mr G. has quantities of pictures old & new—some by Millais, some by Rossetti, others by Burne Jones. The latter’s colouring seemed fine but his drawing & faces peculiar. We went on to Lady Granville’s for a few minutes & thence to Hamilton House where Cornelia had a ball to meet the P & Pss of Wales. Henry stayed only a few minutes & then left me to come home alone– I found Maria & Alice & clung to them. Met Lady Felmer whom I had not seen for years & she was very nice to me. Mr Ashburnham took me to supper & I came home at 2. The drawing room was made into a ball room & supper was in the conservatory on detached tables. The floral decorations were lovely.
