17 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 17th March [1882]. Merthyr slept in town last night & came here to breakfast. I sat with him while he breakfasted & he went off at 11. I walked off to see Lady Burdett Coutts & found her in. She was just writing to Mrs Arthur Hanson & had told her that she wished to make her a present of £100 on acct of her kindness in working the Turkish Embroidery Fund & that the Fund had been reorganised. I did not stay long & came straight home. Worked sewing machine. Miss Louisa Canning, Mrs Willie Hanson, Arthur, Mildred & Merthyr. Miss Canning came to talk over the reestablishment of the English School at Pera. After lunch Henry took Merthyr to the Grosvenor Gallery to see Watt’s pictures & I & Miss Canning followed & joined them. I took Miss Canning afterwards to a shop in Westr Sanctuary to look for school Bible pictures to send to the East—but they were all so bad she wd not buy them. I then left her in Hughes St & went on to join Henry at Sir Wm Drakes. He was better & had been out—but is still immoveable on a sofa. We came home to tea. Blanche & Eda Ashley arrived at the same moment we did. We went to dine at Connie’s & Charlie. Henry & she played cribbage– Charlie & I played a game of letters & words with Bee & Miss Martin.
