24 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 24th March [1882]. Was very tired—breakfasted in bed & got up at 11. Henry & I went to lunch with Ld & Ly Elcho at St James’ Place– He showed us all his pictures &c wh he collects & wh makes him very happy– He has many good things. He has a lovely white Angora cat and walked abt with Pussy sitting on his shoulder. After lunch we went to see Browning’s son’s pictures in an empty house in Queen’s Gate Gardens. They were very uninteresting—hard & no sentiment. A full size figure of a stalwart girl of the Black Forrest tramping down a hill a sickle in one hand & a sheaf of rushes under her arm– Another picture—same girl sitting in profile resting on the ground. We were glad to get away without having to say much to the father & fond aunt. I came home being very tired. Mrs Hanson came to tea & Lady Susan Bourke. We had a dinner party consisting of Genl. & Lady Dickson, Mrs & Miss Smijth, Mr & Mrs Thomson Hankey, Mr Cartwright, Mr A. Burr, Mr Poynter & Mr Kinglake. I sat between Dickson & Thomson Hankey. In the eveng when our guests had gone & I & Hanson (who came after dinner) went to Mrs Jeune’s drum. I introduced Mrs Hanson. The drum was small & not over lively & I was home again by midnight. It rained & was cold. Arthur tells us he is going for a trip to America.
