25 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 25th March [1882]. News of Longfellow the poet’s death. He will be much regretted all over the world. Mr Burton came to see Henry abt the picture he bought of a Castellani for the Nat. Gallery wh Castellani now wants back as he finds the Convent wh sold it had no right to do so. Helped Monty to rearrange his table & made some alterations in the drawing room. Blanche & Olwen came to luncheon & left directly after– Drove out at 3 with Henry; we went to the Miss Montalba’s studio to see what they have ready for the Academy– The 3 younger sisters were there. I liked Hilda Montalba’s picture of 3 Venetian women walking thro’ a mist at Venice– Also the youngest sister’s terra cotta busts were very clever– Another sister had a good portrait of Pss Louisa & Clara had a Venetian picture wh did not please me—the Saluti in back ground was cold & grey & a group in foreground over sunny in effect. Left Henry at Atheneum & then home. Arranged books for an hour. Visit from Genl. B. Hankey. Dined at the d’Antas (Portuguese Minister). Met M & Mme Lützow, Miss Gurwood, Sir Julian Lady & Miss Pauncefote, Sir C. Wyke– After dinner we intended to go to some of the 5 parties we were asked to but it poured so we had not the heart to keep out the servants & so went home.
