12 April 1882 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Wednesday. 12th April [1882]. I breakfasted in bed & then got up & went to the boudoir & remained on the sofa. Luff came over & there was a great deal of arranging & hammering &c in preparation for this evening’s ball. We lunched in the little study. It was a pouring wet day & there was no going out. Richard & Squire Burr left by the 9 train in the morning. Little Juley & Maria & Lady Westr sat in the boudoir with me—& we had plenty of talk. At 6.30 dressed & we dined in the study at 7 & sat in the microscope room until 10 when we had to go down to the ball– Henry & Merthyr played cribbage—while we ladies worked– At last 10 o’cl came. The twins were allowed to sit up on the occasion to their great delight. Merthyr & I opened the ball in a quadrille & then I subsided. There were not very many people I know. We recognised a Mr Surtees one of our fellow travellers on board the “Tasso” going to Norway last year. I made acquaintance with a Mrs Hillyar the wife of one of the secretaries of Legation. They were at Madrid after we left & Mr Hillyar is now at the Hague. She was immensely admired at Madrid & Ct Chaudordy was quite devoted to her—but I thought her rather a vulgar fair english type—with a noisy laugh—& much powdered. She was very polite to me & we sat talking most of the eveng. Lady Westr went to bed at 11, & so did Maria & the twins– Henry disappeared even sooner. At 1 there was supper & Merthyr took me in & afterwards I went off to my bed.
