15 April 1882 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Saturday. 15th April [1882]. Got up after breakfast & went to the boudoir sofa– Theo & Merthyr both went out hunting. Before luncheon it grew very dark and oppressive & Lady Westr and I stepped on to the terrace & saw that a thunderstorm was coming up all round & presently thunder began to growl & there was rain. After luncheon it went on again & there were some vivid flashes of lightning & the storm encreased. Henry & I were to have gone out in the Victoria at 3 & to have taken the twins with us but we had to give it up on account of the pouring rain. Theo came in abt 4 dripping and Merthyr came an hour after also soaked. At 4.30 Lady Elizabeth Parker came from Bath to stay with them. She is plain & not very young & has her hair short from effect of typhoid fever last year. She seems amiable & kind. Dined at 7.30. Theo, Merthyr, Henry & Ly Westr played whist. I played cribbage with Lady Elisabeth. Had a good deal of talk with Lady Westr today abt her mother & Grandmother. The latter she said was a good natured old lady who lived in Queen Anne St & wore a high mop cap & very full stiff black satin gowns & was very kind to Lady Westr & her brother always giving them calf’s foot jelly & ½ crown when they went to see her. Lady Westr is herself 86 & her Grandmother died at the age of 90 & must have been almost of the time of Queen Anne.
