22 April 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 22nd [April 1882]. It was a dull morning & rained a good deal. Henry went to the funeral of poor Sir Henry Cole at Brompton cemetery. Edward came & brought little Onie to spend the morning and she amused herself washing the leaves of my plants. Mrs Burr called & sat some time talking. Edward fetched away Onie again at 1. Henry returned from the funeral very much astonished at the high church ceremonies he there saw—the clergymen in stoles, berrettas & preceded by a boy carrying a cross– Large lighted candles were put round the coffin & Henry began to wonder if it were not an RC church. At 3 it cleared up a bit & Henry & I drove out together. We went to call on Miss Hogarth and found her out—then we went to the Drummonds to enquire after Mrs Kay & Mrs & Miss Drummond were just driving from the door but returned when they saw us & made us go in for a few minutes. Mrs Drummond said Mrs Kay was better but had been dangerously ill & had a fearful operation. We did not stay long—went on & left cards on M. & Mme d’Antas– Went to Garland’s hotel to call on Sir Fenwick Williams who was laid up with gout in the hand. He seemed very feeble but knew us and was glad to see us. Henry went on to the Atheneum & I to leave cards on the Gladstones & then home. Monty returned home & dined with us. In the eveng he went to the Club & I & Henry played cribbage.
