24 April 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 24th [April 1882]. Mama came to see me with Temmie. The latter stayed to luncheon—& sat & talked with me all the morning. Mr Thomson Hankey came to see us brim full of a letter he had recd from Sir Wm Gregory wh he showed us & which he was evidently going round the town exhibiting to his friends. Sir Wm tells in a very amusing manner how he happened to arrive at Palermo by the same train that brought a great Sicilian banker home from the mountains where he had been carried by banditti who had released him for 80,000 fcs & that at every station his friends flocked to meet him & kissed him so loudly that Sir Wm at first thought it was the popping of soda water bottles! Sir Wm adds that he never kissed anyone so loud in his life himself. At 3 I went to Blanche’s in the brougham & fetched her to drive with me. I ordered my summer hat at Heath—shopped for myself & for Blanche & went home at 5. Found Miss Hogarth waiting for me. Henry was in. Had tea. Monty returned from Brighton & went to the H of C. Henry & I dined with B & Edward & met Mr Burton (Dr), Lady Taunton & Sir Arthur Otway who came a little late being kept in H. of C by Debate on Budget. Blanche sang in evening a little.
