26 April 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 26th April [1882]. Wrote letters, read, worked. Connie & Charles came to see me & offered me a ticket for the wedding tomorrow at Windsor of P. Leopold. Henry would not let me go on account of my knee. Henry went off to the city to luncheon so I lunched alone & I did not go out at all. I went upstairs & unpacked and arranged some of Henry’s books which Fred forwarded & had belonged to their mother. When Henry returned he brought news that Mr Rate was seriously ill with inflammation of the lungs & we telegraphed for news of him. Squire Burr came to tea & Mrs Thompson Hankey came & very kindly brought me some flowers. After T Squire & I played a game of cribbage—& then I had one with Henry till it was time to dress for ¼ 7 dinner. We went to the Bach Concert in St James’ Hall in the Choir of wh Blanche & Constance both sang. I met Mrs Poynter as we went in & she sat with us & was very amusing. The Missa brevis of Bach was not very well done—but Mendlessohns 98th Psalm, & Gluck’s Armida were very well given. The solo singers were 2 young ladies a Miss Elliott & a Miss Robertson. The latter had a very good clear fresh voice. They are ladies of good family, clergyman’s daughters who have taken to public concert singing as a profession. After the concert I saw Otto Goldschmidt & Jenny Lind & congratulated them on the success of the evening.
