2 May 1882 — 3 Savile Row | |
Tuesday. 2nd May [1882]. Constance brought her boy Monty to stay with us & left him. Maria came & lunched with us. Miss Hogarth & a niece of her’s Miss Dickens came also. Henry took Alice to the Brit: Museum to meet Sir Henry & Miss Thompson. I & Maria went out in a hansom together shopping & we got back to Blanches at 5. I went in to tea with her & Maria went on to Langham House. Connie & Mrs Poynter came to tea there and then we had music. Mrs P. & Connie played & Blanche sang. After which grand family exhibition of babies—& then Mama & Alice arrived & Mrs Poynter & I returned to our homes in a cab. I had just time to dress & then Henry & I went to dine with Mrs Gerard Leigh. Edward Ponsonby came in to tell us before we went out that Forster had resigned—all the Irish suspects were to be let out of prison & Ireland was to have all she asked for. Everybody was very low about the state of affairs– Henry is very anxious & all agree that Gladstone is ruining the country. We dined quite alone with Mrs Gerard Leigh & she took us to the opera to hear Dinorah. It was very badly given and Mme Sembrich sang very badly & acted worse. Lord Cork came to the box & sat some time. On the way to the opera Mrs Leigh told me she had heard that Henry was to return to Consple. I said I could hardly believe it possible as Gladstone would never allow it. But this is the general impression. She said also that she had been to Rome this winter & found Lady Paget still very unpopular but quite firmly planted in her seat. | |
