13 May 1882 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Saturday. 13th [May 1882]. Sat in Mrs B’s boudoir with her while she wrote & we talked & I made up cigarettes for Henry & got them done very shortly after lunch. Then I went & joined Henry sitting under the trees & reading. The sun was very hot but there was a cold background in the wind. We found it too chilly to sit long under the trees—& under the wall of the house it was too hot in the sun without an umbrella. Henry & I strolled down to the lime avenue in the Park & round the Grove & then back to Mrs Burr who was sitting on the terrace. I remained there with her till 5 o’cl when 2 Miss Scobells arrived & we had tea– Later came Mr Fergusson, Mr Hylton Price, Sir J. & Miss Lubbock, & her sister Mrs Mulholland a young widow who lost her husband after 3 weeks’ marriage & now lives with her father. Mr & Mrs Arbuthnot also came. Squire took me to dinner & Mr Fergusson sat on my left. I had a long talk with Sir J. Lubbock who is a very agreeable little man—fair with weak eyes & a low voice. We began with politics & he talked of science & how anxious he was to get science taught in public schools. He says that out of 40 hours of instruction a boy gets in school now only 2 is devoted to science & he wants to get a proportion of 6 hours– We spoke of electricity & the wonderful discoveries now being made– The subject turned from that to the Channel tunnel wh he says he disapproves of & wh wd involve our keeping an army of 50,000 more soldiers than we have at present.
