14 May 1882 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Sunday. 14th May [1882]. Got up at 7 & read till breakfast. Went to church at 11 & came out before the sermon– It was a very bright day the sun very hot but the wind cold. In the afternoon I sat out in the terrace with Mrs Arbuthnot some time & then she went away & I sat with Mrs Burr. Mr Fergusson, Mr Price, Sir J. Lubbock, Henry & Mrs Mulholland went off in the pony carriage to Silchester & came home abt 6. I was reading upstairs when Henry came in. He said he had had a very pleasant afternoon. He said also Sir J. Lubbock had tried to persuade him to go into Parliament & said there were 2 or 3 constituencies to be had. The Squire took me to dinner & Mr Price sat by me & I told him all abt the Venice Glass Co & persuaded him he must no longer go to Salviati of whom he said he had hitherto bought. After dinner I had a long talk with Mrs Mulholland. She said that Lord & Ly F. Cavendish had dined with them the Wedy before he was murdered & the very day he was appointed Ct Secry to Ireland & Lady F. was in tearing spirits the reason of wh they only knew the next day when the appt was announced. He even had said to Mrs Mulholland that he pitied Forster’s successor & she then said when she heard of his appt what a hypocrite he was”–
