15 May 1882 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Monday. 15th May [1882]. Down to 9 o’cl breakfast. Directly after it the Lubbocks & Mr Fergusson went away. Mr Hylton Price & Arthur left by earlier train. I sat & read in Mrs Burr’s room till time to dress & we went off by 10.5 train at the same time as Mr & Mrs Arbuthnot. We changed lines at Reading & went down to Milton Court to stay one night. Mr Rate is much better but still on his sofa an invalid. Henry sat with him talking & I sat with Alice Rate—then they went out & I went to sit with Mr Rate & talked over Henry & my plans. He discouraged Sir J. Lubbocks idea that Henry ought to go into Parliament. While we were talking Dr Webber suddenly appeared from London so I went back to the library & sat there till Henry & Alice came in. They came in very cold—the wind is east & it was bitter. I had an hysterical fit of crying & had to retire to my own room till dinner. We dined at 8.30. Mr Rate came in his dressing gown & sat a few minutes in the dining room on his way up to bed– We did not sit up late—all being tired–
