13 June 1882 — En route to Christiania (Oslo)
Tuesday. 13th June [1882]. Abt 4 o’cl we arrived at Larvik & remained some time taking in cargo– Had some tea & went on deck & found the well known Norwegian scenery rocks—fir trees & bright coloured wooden houses. The rest of our journey was mostly in the fjords. We went thro’ a small canal cut thro’ an isthmus at Moss where we stopped to discharge cargo; we came out into another fjord & straight on to Christiania & had a very pretty journey getting in abt 3. A man from Con. Genl. Mitchell met us & took us to the hotel Victoria. Mr & Mrs Mitchell were there & welcomed us. I had corresponded with Mrs M. when she was looking after refugees at Philippopolis but we had never met. She is a tall fine handsome Scotch lady. After resting & having a light refreshment Henry & I & the Mitchells set out for a walk. We went to see the curious Viking ship wh was discovered a year or two ago & is preserved here– It had been buried in a peat bog & covered with sand & it had served as a coffin for a Viking king—some remains of his bones &c were also found. More valuable things had disappeared when the grave had been rifled many many years before. We went afterwards into the Storthing or houses of Parliament wh were to sit at 5.30– It was 5 o’cl & so we went in to see the rooms where it was held—they are plain but handsome & unpretending. One of the members took us in. We went to Mrs Mitchell’s house to wait until it was 5.30 & then returned but the smell of the crowd of strangers on the staircase who were waiting to go in was too much for me & I begged to come away. We returned to the hotel & Mr Mitchell went with us. The news from Egypt today wh we found on our arrival here are terrible—80 Europeans massacred & our consul wounded– Also 7 fresh murders in Ireland in one day– Mr Mitchell left us at 7. We dined & went early to bed.
