18 June 1882 — Molde | |
Sunday. 18th June [1882]. Got up abt 10– Fine day. Watched all the inhabitants going by to church very neat & clean people—some very well dressed. Dined at 12.30 & had a very good clean little dinner. The landlord waited on us. The landlady made me a present of a rose plant. We went at 1.30 on board the little steamer wh was to take us to Syltebo. Started at 2 & stopped with the post at 8 different villages– At some of them we discharged sacks of flour. All this took us so long that we did not reach our destination till 9 in the evening. We read, played cribbage & had coffee to diversify the monotony of the day. Monty, Lord Rowton & Lord Bertie met us on the shore having arrived from England via Hull last Monday. We found they had arranged the house & made it most comfortable. Our bed room of last year on the ground floor they had made into a drawing room & I was put upstairs. The servants are out at the farm. We had supper at 10 & Henry & I had a good appetite. Ld Rowton gave champagne to celebrate our arrival. We gave them the news of the Egyptian massacre wh had not reached them. | |
