25 June 1882 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Sunday. 25th June [1882]. A piping hot day. Stayed indoors & studied drawing. Monty & I set to work and studied perspective together and went on till nearly dinner time. We dined at 4 and then Lord Rowton & I went sea fishing and caught 12 whiting. John & Thorwald went with us as there was so much stream & tide that one cd not row home alone. As it was when we came back they cd not row further than half way across the mouth of the trout stream & had to land us on an island & a small river boat came & carried me over the rest of it. Lord Rowton walked across & was up to his knees in water. While we were fishing the steamer came in with the letters and Siemonsen came in a boat from Noste with the letter bag, the beer & Monty’s missing box but he could not get it up & he had to wade across & the boat had to wait till the turn of the tide. Hill had been to Noste for the post & she walked up home with us– We got letters & papers from England of 15th & I got a letter from Lady Ely from Balmoral in answer to one I wrote her from Berlin in wh the Queen sent us remembrances. We had supper & wrote for the post & then went to bed fondly hoping to rest. Abt 2.30 we were roused by the constant crow of a lively cock. I rose & went to Bertie & got him to go out & get the men to chase him. They succeeded in quieting him for a time but at 5 he returned to his crow & so we had little rest.
