29 June 1882 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Thursday. 29th June [1882]. Monty & I studied perspective together & worked out angular perspective from the book. It took us nearly till dinner time & when we had done it we went & sat out of doors to try & sketch this house with all these rules applied. While I & Monty were at work Lord Rowton took sandwiches & set off for a climb up the mountain on the opposite side of our valley & did come home to dinner. After dinner Henry & I set out for a walk to the bridge over the mountain torrent on this side of the valley. It was a pleasant evening tho’ coolish. We had a charming walk thro’ juniper, bilberry bushes, nut trees &c. The wild roses & the fox gloves were all in bloom & grew everywhere in quantities. When we got to the bridge we found that we were only a short distance to a sætter & so we climbed up to it. Found an old woman beating flax for her spinning wheel wh stood ready. A man was in the house with 3 little girls & we tried to talk to each other. After resting a while we set off to go down to Syltebo again & I picked a large bouquet en route of roses, woodruff, fox gloves, ferns & masses of stag moss & a little Linnea– We came upon a pretty grassy road wh took us to Fagerslet & so we got home by the road. Put up my flowers & talked to Ld Rowton of his expedition. Sat down to play cribbage with Henry when in came Monty with 2 salmon he had just caught. We had a merry supper & Henry determined to go out fishing tomorrow early–
