1 July 1882 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Saturday. 1st July [1882]. My 39th birthday. When we came down in the morning we found the servants had strewn the steps of the porch with fresh flowers which Siemonsen says is the fashion in some of the valley & that it is done every Saturday. I marked kitchen cloths. Went with Hill to the larder to see her make pastry. Lunched at 1 with Bertie & Henry. Lord Rowton & Monty went out fishing up to Bjornes & took their lunch with them & did not return till 6 when the fishing was over. I went down to the bank to practice casting. Henry went to fish at Friswold but no one caught anything except a trout got by Ld R. We dined at 7 & had chicken as a birthday feast & they drank my health in champagne. The framework of the root house was finished & beer distributed to the carpenters. Henry & I played cribbage. The others went for a walk.
