3 July 1882 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Monday. 3rd [July 1882]. Monty went up to Bjornes Henry to Friswold & Lord Rowton & I went down to the bank & Rest to cast– I cast for a long time at the Bank when I suddenly got a rise. Lord R. at that moment came down to where I was & I told him abt it. So he cast where I told him & in 2 minutes as we were standing talking there was a flop & he had a fish on. Henry was fishing in the boat opposite and he came over for John to gaff it. But that was not so easily done– Lord R had to get into the boat & go almost over to Noste as the fish ran down stream & then stuck at the bottom of the river– At last he started it again & brought him near shore & landed down on the point on the left of the road where Monty landed his 52 lb. fish last year– Here at last Lord Rowton succeeded in getting his fish & it proved a 30 lb. fish. He was nearly an hour landing him. At breakfast this morning it was announced that there had arrived a photographer & we were all to be ready to be grouped in the porch. I set to work to make water biscuits after breakfast & in the middle of it I had to go & sit for it & we were done with all servants—the only absentees being Henry & John. After dinner I went out on the Bank fishing with Monty & old Ericson now goes by the name of the Marquis of Stinkpots (pronounced in French to make it more aristocratic). I caught nothing & no one else did.
