10 July 1882 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Monday. 10th [July 1882]. It was a cloudy but hot morning. I went & cast at the bank & then came home & painted. At 2.30 I drove Ld Rowton to the church to see the Carpenter’s sister’s wedding. Bertie came in another carriole. As there was no signs of the bridal party we drove on to Sierra where Bertie & Ld Rowton got some milk & flap brod & then we went back to the churchyard & sat & waited. Monty came soon after. Abt 4 the approach of the bridal party was heralded by firing of guns at the houses they past & there soon appeared 5 or 6 carts & carrioles in the first of wh was the Carpenter & the bride & bridegroom. The bride wore a plain grey dress with a wreath of myrtle & over it a white silk handkerchief—a brown shawl. These 3 she took off when she went into church & remained in her bridal wreath. She was a red haired clear complexioned girl strong & well grown. The bgroom was thin tall pale sandy haired. We all went in & took our seats in church & after a while the priest came out of the vestry. He wore a white ruff & a black gown & was a fat jolly looking round red faced old fellow & reminded one of an old burgermaster in an ancient picture. The clerk led a hymn after wh the bride & bridegroom went up to the altar where the priest made them a speech of ½ hour. Then he began to read the service. He asked them if they were willing to take each other. Then he joined their hands & made the sign of the cross over them. Then he laid his hands on their heads several times & blessed them & then returned to their seats in the church. The clerk now started another hymn & the bridegroom got up went round the back of the communion table & deposited a price of money on the table as an offering for the priest & another piece on the desk of the clerk & then returned to his seat. Then all the men went & did the same thing, the clerk all the time singing a hymn. When all the men had finished the bride got up & led off the women & we all followed her example. This ceremony over the priest began to sing in a discordant manner some more of the service & a curious Amen of abt 4 bars of music was answered by the congregation & after a blessing & another crossing from the priest it was over. We shook hands with the married pair & returned home & dined abt 5.30. Monty & I fished at the bank but saw nothing. Ld Rowton ditto. Henry lost a fish. We supped at 11. There was thunder & heavy showers in the day.
