17 July 1882 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Monday. 17th July [1882]. A piping hot day & dreary scirocco. I set to work at my painting & was absorbed in it when Monty called out that he had just seen a salmon jump near the bank—at this I ran to put on my boots & he & I went down to cast at the bank—but naught. I found the wind made it difficult to cast well– Monty soon went up to look after the iron piping which had arrived last night & wh is going to supply the house with water. I also returned to my painting & then read till dinner time at 4. At 6 I drove off with Bertie & Swari to Hunde to fish for trout. I stayed on the bank for the 1st hour & half & let Bertie fish first—then I fished till I lost my casting line & Bertie went back to it– At 10 we had caught 9 fish & set off home. It began at that moment to rain & before we got home it poured. However I had my mackintosh & wd have come home quite dry had not the water accumulated all in one corner & by a stupid move of mine poured all into my lap. I had to change on getting home—everybody else was wet & Henry was the only one who had caught a fish & that a large trout.
