3 August 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 3rd August [1882]. Sir James Hudson called abt 11 & sat & had a long talk. Clarita Hunt came to see me & sat with me all the morning. I had not seen her since we left Madrid & since then her husband is dead & she is come over from Madrid to see her boy who is at school here. At 12 I had Blanche’s carriage so I took Clarita back to her lodgings & then went on to see Lady Tavistock. She was out so I went on to see Mrs Hamilton & Mr & Mrs Warrington Wood & found them at home. I thence went to Langham House to join Henry & lunch with Mama at 2 o’cl. At 3 we went to the National Gallery to see the new additions that had been bought at the Hamiltons sale. We met Jenny Lind & her husband there. He (Mr Goldschmidt) amused me with his criticisms on the great Botticelli with the 3 rows of angels. He said they were “too regular too like a finger exercise!” Mrs Burr joined us there & Mr Burton did the honors & took us also downstairs to see those wh were not yet ready to be hung. Mrs Burr & I went from there to Elise’s in a cab to see if I could find a bonnet & not finding one I liked we went on to Savile Row & had tea. Henry & I dined at home & Arthur fetched me after & took me to the Comedy Theatre to meet the Hambros & we saw a very stupid kind of opera comique called Bocaccio. A. & I walked home after as it was a lovely evening. Henry stayed at home having a cold in his eyes.
