6 August 1882 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Sunday. 6th August [1882]. I walked thro’ the fields with Ida Rate to Westgate Church. It was a lovely day—bright—a light breeze & the bells from Ranmore church were ringing a splendid peal– Mr Karslake preached a short eloquent sermon– Sat out most of the afternoon. Mr Rogers came over to see Henry with a sister. He is still a great cripple tho’ better than last year. I had to help him about up & down steps & we struck up a great friendship. He did me the honor of saying I had been like a daughter to him. I have a great respect for him & feel that he is a very good man with a broad mind & large heart. He told us that at Christmas he was in the habit of giving a “thieves’ dinner” & that it was a success. Lord & Lady Sligo came over & her sister Madeleine de Peyronnet whom I had not seen for years, & a Miss Lyall—sister of Sir C. Lyall. The Sligos have hired a house in this neighbourhood. When they were all gone I took a stroll with Alice Rate. We supped at abt 9 & went to bed early.
