7 August 1882 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 7th August [1882]. Mr Poynter left by an early train. Henry & I left at 11. Alice Rate took us to the station. Being Bank holiday we were rather late. Drove straight home to Savile Row. Had lunch. Arthur came to lunch. Henry went to a meeting of Nat. Gallery. I walked to Clarges St to see Gertie Ker Seymer & found her at home. Sat with her chatting till she brought me home at 5 in her carriage– The aspect of London today was very curious– Like Sunday in someways the shops being shut & streets empty—but no church bells or people with prayerbooks. We dined with Sir Wm & Ly Gregory. Met Lord Monck, Lord Northbrook & Lady Emme Baring, Mr Scharf, Mr Burton (N.G.), Mr & Mrs Poynter. Ld Monck took me to dinner & I sat near Sir Wm. Pleasant evening.
