9 August 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 9th August [1882]. I received a letter from Css Marcello giving me commissions for her so I went off shopping directly after breakfast having persuaded Henry to keep indoors all day on account of his bad cold. Having chosen some hats at Durrants I took a cab & drove to Lady Gregory’s & begged her to excuse my lunching with her as my sister Maria wrote to say she was coming up from Bournemouth for a few hours & wd lunch with me. I went on to Lady Hammond & sat for some time with her & heard all the old storys & complaints against Lady Strangford, Ld Granville &c &c & then I returned home stopping en route at Mr Burton’s to beg him to come & prescribe for Henry’s cold. Maria arrived at 1.30 & lunched with us & then she & I walked out together shopping & then returned to Savile Row to meet Alice & Mrs Austin who had come up from Putney to meet Maria. At 4.30 M set off to go back again to Bourne. Alice & I walked out together to try & match something at Hellbronner’s & returned home by 5. Arthur, my brother, Sir Wm Gregory & Mrs Austin & Alice were at tea at 5 & the 2 later then returned to Putney. I & Arthur went out together at ¼ to 7 & took a walk—as far as his lodgings & on to the Park. We took a turn down by Rotten Row & saw a few melancholy Peers & M.P.s who are forced to be still in town & then Arthur took me home & left me at our door & we had a long & serious talk by the way abt right & wrong.
