11 August 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 11th August [1882]. Got up at 7. Breakfast at 8 & left London by 10 o’cl train from Charing X with Henry, Alice, Hill, Jerry & Maurice the footman. The Ex Empress of the French went by the same train for Munich. We took our tickets to Lucerne. We had a good crossing & Alice & I sat on deck. We crossed from Dover to Calais. We had lunch at Calais & got into our sleeping cars. Alice & I went in a compartment with a strange looking lady whose name we ascertained to be Mrs Buller. Henry had to go with some gentlemen. Dined very badly at a place called Tegnier. Alice was very sick having been upset by the steamer altho’ not sick then. We passed a hot uncomfortable night & the train shook us most horribly & the morng of
