12 August 1882 — En route to Lucerne
Saturday. 12th August [1882]. we arrived at Basle nearly 2 hours behind time & found the Lucerne train had started 10 mins: before our arrival. Had to wait 2 hours & so we breakfasted & washed. Henry & Alice went into the town. At 10.15 we started for Lucerne & got there abt 1. Alice was so sick & ill I hustled her to the Hotel St Gotthard & into bed & there she remained for the rest of the day. Henry & I lunched & then went & walked in the town to see the curious old houses & covered bridges & the grand monument Lion cut in the rock which is one of the most impressive monuments one ever saw. Had dinner at table d’hôte & went early to bed. Henry went to the station & packed off the 3 servants to Venice by 10 o’cl train & they will arrive tomorrow eveng. I slept in Alice’s room.
