14 August 1882 — Hospenthal
Monday. 14th August [1882]. We left Hospenthal at 8 oclock & drove to Airolo where we stopped to lunch & rest the horses meang to go on to Biasca. The inn at Airolo was so full we cd not get places to lunch but the landlady took us to their private house close by where we had a very good meal & were comfortable & quiet. It began to rain hard & we suddenly bethought ourselves of taking the train there instead of Biasca. We settled with our coachman & had just time to go off to the station & came to Locarno by train getting there abt 5. Went to Grand hotel—a horrid barrack most uncomfortable crammed with Germans—we got rooms No 100 &c &c! Dressed & went to table d’hôte dinner—badly served long & tedious. Cribbage– Early to bed. There was a thunderstorm nearly all night.
