15 August 1882 — Locarno
Tuesday. 15th August [1882]. Henry & Alice got up early & walked up to the Madonna del Sasso. I got up later—dressed & packed & somehow missed the time for breakfast. Alice & I not having breakfasted we had to get coffee on board the steamer w started at 10. There were quantities of Germans & also many Italians. We reached Baveno at 1.30 & went to Hotel Bellevue. There were very few travellers there but we found the Imp. P. & Pss of Germany staying there also Mme Minghetti & her daughter Mme Dönhoff & her little girl Eugenie. We lunched & then unpacked & dressed & rested & dined at table d’hôte at 6. Afterwards we sat on the terrace & had coffee. Ct Seckendorff & Mme Minghetti came to see us & said they wd come again after supper as the P. & Pss were going to sup after their drive & a part of the terrace was screened off for them that they might sup out of doors. When they had finished the screen was withdrawn & the Pss sent Mme Minghetti to call us & we stood there & had a long talk with their R.Hs. The Pss talked a great deal abt the East with Henry & also abt Art—& Morelli who only left here yesterday. When the Prince & Pss went away Mme Minghetti & Ct Seckendorff & Mme Dönhoff came & sat with us & chatted till bedtime. The Royal Party start tomorrow at 5 to go to Macugnaga & so we shall see Mme Minghetti quietly.
