22 August 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 22nd [August 1882]. Busy morning arranging rooms & moving furniture. Helped Alice to remake one of her dresses. Lunch at 1. Afterwards went to call on Olga Mocenigo—she was not in. Alice & Henry went out when I returned & then I went again to Olga after 5 & sat with her some time & heard abt the sad suicide of young Mocenigo the last of the house, her brother in law. Olga reproached herself that she had not married him as her family had desired that she might have saved him “& prevented the extinction of the family.” She has only a little girl now & so the name ceases with the present Count who is 83. We dined at 7 & took a row in the gondola afterwards. There was a good deal of wind & it was cool & pleasant after a very hot day. We heard a boat full of people singing “La Biondina in Gondoletta.”
