1 September 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 1st [September 1882]. Alice began to read aloud to me but Cortelazzo came & interrupted us & talked all the morning. Ct Mocenigo St Stae came to call & sat & talked a long time explaining his hobby that he claims the Commanderie de l’ordre de Chypre. He showed us a letter from Gladstone in wh he answers his letter on the subject by saying that the Ct writes so small & with such pale ink that he could not read his letter! Henry & Alice walked to the Piazza & I joined them in the gondola– Took Henry to the Venezia & Murano glass shop. Then we went to Riettis antiquity shop & saw some iron work wh I think Merthyr wd like to buy, Cortelazzo left us & returned to Vicenza. We all went on Piazza after dinner & walked abt listening to the band.
