4 September 1882 — Mogliano
Monday. 4th [September 1882]. Breakfast in our rooms. Went down abt 10—sat talking to Andriana till breakfast at 12. At 1.30 Henry & I drove with her to Noale to see a picture wh is on sale. Uccio drove the promessi sposi. We found a charming little town—an ancient borgo with 2 gate ways & walls wh once were round the town & the ruins of a fortress. There was a very handsome column for a standard with date 1549. The picture called Carpaccio was in the sacristy of the church. It was a large altar piece on wood represents St John with Sts Peter & Paul. It is much damaged but not in the heads—& untouched. Went & refreshed at a clean little caffé & then return– Henry amused us on the way with his Italian reminiscences. How he had known Cavour, Silvio, Polico & had been a conspirator in his youth. Had joined the Carbonieri & had secretly carried letters in his enthusiasm for Italian liberty. We got home at 5 & at the same moment Mlle Cozzi drove up with her nieces. We had tea in the garden—& then took a little walk till dinner. Dined at 7. Sang in evening & so did Theresa– Played dominos with Henry, Andriana & Alice.
